Buying a forklift, briefly.
- What do I need before I search?
- Know the heaviest real load, its load center, your highest rack beam, lowest doorway, aisle width, surface, shift length, and whether the truck works indoors, outdoors, or both. Capacity on the plate is tied to a stated load center and lift height.
- Which power type fits the job?
- Electric fits many warehouse applications; LPG can offer fast refueling and indoor-outdoor flexibility where ventilation and site rules allow; diesel usually fits outdoor and heavier-duty work. Choose from the actual duty cycle, ventilation and emissions limits, charging or fuel access, surface, and local requirements.
- What should I verify on a used forklift?
- Get the model, serial, hour-meter and data-plate photos, service records, and a loaded operating video. For LPG or diesel, ask for a true cold start and inspect the engine, transmission, leaks, and emissions equipment. For electric, get the battery details, a recent capacity test, and the charger's input requirements.
- What changes the electric-forklift deal?
- Confirm that the battery and charger are included, the charger output matches the battery, and its input matches your building's voltage and phase. Battery chemistry, age, amp-hour rating, connector, test results, and remaining warranty can outweigh a fresh paint job.
- Do California rules affect the choice?
- California's Zero-Emission Forklift Regulation applies to specified Class IV and V large spark-ignition fleets and phases requirements in over time. Exceptions and extensions exist, so confirm applicability with CARB before acquiring LPG or other covered equipment.
- Why does the data plate matter?
- OSHA says the plate must show the truck's capacity and any attachment. A side shifter, clamp, longer load center, or greater lift height can reduce usable capacity, so reject a truck with a missing plate or an attachment the plate does not cover.
